Darrell Young Hockey Program
Under the proven leadership of Darrell Young, the program will provide a well-structured, organized program for players of all ages with the emphasis on fun, fitness and skill development and participation. The programs motto is “We don’t just run drills, we teach the game”.
Darrell Young, Director
Darrell is in his 24rd year as an National Hockey League Scout, working with the Washington Capitals from 1987-1997,the Nashville Predators from 1997-200, the Tampa bay Lightning form 2002-2008 and has been with the Vancouver Canucks since 2008. While with the Lightning Darrell was part of the team that won the Presidents Cup (best regular season record in NHL) , two Southeast Division Titles ,the Prince of Wales Trophy (Eastern Champions) and the 2004 Stanley Cup. Since joining the Canucks the team has won tfour Northwest Division Titles, TheCampbell Bowl (2011Western Conference Champions) and advancing to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2011.
In 1985 Darrell began his 13 year coaching career at Dalhousie University where he played from 1977-79.During his time at Dalhousie, the Halifax native became Dalhousie’s all-time wins coach and one of the winingests coach in Canadian Intercollegiate Hockey history .His clubs were consistently ranked amongst the top in CIS Hockey, winning four Kelly Division titles, two AUHC regular season titles, three Lobster Pot Tournaments and appeared in the league final twice and CIAU regional final in Toronto in his first year. In 1990, Young served as co-coach of the AUHC all-star team that played the Canadian Olympic Team. The CIAU and Hockey Canada selected Darrell to lead Team Canada at the Inaugural World University Hockey Championships in Detroit, Michigan in April 1997, which Canada won over team USA 5-4 in overtime.
Darrell hasalso severed as a guest coach with the Canadian National Team prior to the 1992 Albertville, France Olympics and the 1994 Lillehammer, Norway Olympics. Between working with Nashville and Tampa Bay, Darrell served as the Director of Hockey Operations for two years for the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. During his two years in Moncton , several players were either drafted by the NHL or played in the NHL, including Steve Bernier, Patrick Thoreson, PA Parenateau and Corey Crawford.
While at Dalhousie University he had the opportunity to work with some of the leading local coaches who worked as Assistant Coaches with the Tigers; including Trevor Steinberg, Shawn MacKenzie, Frank Hubley, Gerry Gunter, Jake Grimes, Keifer House, Tom Innes, Mike Ritcey, Paddy Flynn, Brad Crossley and Tyler Naugler.
Through his connections in the hockey world, Darrell has been able to ensemble a high quality teaching and coaching staff.
